from self to community care ~ 3 pm pst / 6pm est / 00h00 cet

with malek yalaoui

we all know that self care runs deeper than bubble baths and cupcakes but what happens when caring for ourselves is beyond our capacity? how do shame and ableism interact to keep us isolate when we most need community? what would it mean to apply audre lorde's declaration that "caring for myself ... is an act of political warfare" to caring for each other? these are just some of the questions we will explore together.

malek yalaoui  ~ shey/sher ~ malek is a bitch. fierce bitch, loving bitch, bad bitch, head bitch in charge, bitch and half, boss bitch, fat bitch, etc. here to reclaim all that has been lost and to open shey's arms wide to offer the world a consensual hug. heroes include jessamyn stanley and stacey abrams along with personal friends like parneet chohan and the other malek.

interconnected earth: natural dye with food waste ~ 7pm est / 4pm pst

Interconnected Earth” explores the interconnectedness of everything through the lens of natural dyeing. We will learn how to use food waste to naturally dye fibers. In this workshop, this will be demonstrated using onion skins and avocado skins/pits with cotton fabric. We will discuss our relationship to land, food, plants, the intrinsic value of nature, and what it means to embed one material with another.

you do not need any materials to participate if you only want to watch. however, if you would like to participate in real-time on zoom, or want to try it out i would recommend the following (please read thoroughly) a small piece cloth made of natural fiber (ie. cotton, silk, wool). you can also use an old tshirt, scrap fabric, an old pair of socks. wool is okay, but will shrink when heated and you will need cream of tartar as a mordant!! **a great way to test if something is natural is to look at the care tag, or if you can, burn a small piece** if it smells like a campfire and does not make plastic bubbles, it is natural! dyestuffs - this is whatever you would like to use as your natural dye. i will be using onion skins and avocado skins/pits to demonstrate, but you can bring whatever! tumeric powder, marigolds, and hibiscus flowers always yield great results, but feel free to get experimental. it is okay if what you choose does not end up how you want, it is all an experiment! a mordant - this is a binding agent that binds the dye to your fiber. for cotton, you can use alum (you can find this in the grocery store, it is used in canning), and for wool you can use cream of tartar (can also be found in the grocery store). if you do not have access to a mordant that is okay! your dye will be less permanent and might fade either a bit or completely after some washes a pot that is big enough to submerge your fabric sample under water by at least two inches ** for this class it can be something you use to cook in but we will go over when you need to use a NOT food pot ** a wooden spoon or other heatsafe utensil for stirring access to a stovetop or burner access to a sink and soap optional - rubber bands or floss/string if you want to tiedye, thick rubber gloves if you are sensitive to heat

constitution and context: how to use tethering to expand ~ 1pm est / 10am pst

This workshop will explore the different ways our physical world is connected to us and how we can honor and become aware of those relationships to heal, be expanded, and live in the present moment. These connections can also inform our diet/lifestyle practices. The workshop will touch on how to use seasons and the day/night cycle to inspire nourishing dishes for healing, mental clarity, and overall health. After a discussion about context and our own constitution, participants will be given access to suggested practices to explore and an opportunity to honor our connections collectively.

ambient poetics ~ 3pm est / 12am pst

Come play with your ambient energy and tune yourself into the subtle forces at play in every moment! Part healing, part intuition practice, this poetry workshop aims to allow us access to a writing practice that invokes magic and intuition. In Ambient Poetics we will experiment with, explore and create space in our bodies and minds to allow for a freewriting process to emerge. Take this workshop if you want to experiment with tapping into your ambient self (or discover what that is!) and tap into the eternal flow of creativity and discovery that exists there. This workshop will allow for participants to experiment with transmitting ambient information into poetry and to develop conscious techniques that help get you out of your head. We will write our way through our ambient selves and create conscious space for future intuitions to flow.

x Please note we will be practicing visualizations in this workshop. If you would like, a blindfold or scarf would be helpful.
x Please wear something comfy and set yourself up in a comfortable environment!
x Please bring something to write on.

Diction and (Dis)ableism: Untangling Grammars of Sense ~ 1pm est / 10am pst

This workshop seeks to (1) interrogate how (dis)ableism roots as a practice in our diction and (2) begin to respond to how we can retool our diction to more accurately express our experiences without foregrounding Ability. (Ability, as defined by the facilitator, is neither inherent nor natural. Ability is a tool for a capital projection.) The goal of the workshop is to help differently identify quieter ableist narratives, rethink/ refeel the diction of condition, and find generative ground for us to create different frameworks for non-(dis)ableist linguistic engagement.

Be ready to be vulnerable. Be ready to feel challenged, curious, doubtful and, most importantly, open. Be willing to probe into parts of yourself that likely aren’t offered direct attention and care. Be prepared to care. Be prepared to think as you know your think, feel as you feel. There are no other requirements other than showing up as yourself with a willingness to place substantive effort into yourself.

mawjoudin: am i feminine/masculine enough? gender expression within the queer community ~ 3pm est / 12am pst

This discussion-based session will be an open space for Queer people to share their experiences and ideas on the topic of gender expression and pressure applied to this expression by fellow Queer people. Throughout the discussion, participants will be invited to interpret their experiences from a social, cultural, political, and economic perspective. We will look into the roots of such expectations of gender expression and how to dismantle them within ourselves and others. Are these expectations a display of internalized Queerphobia and/or heteronormativity? Maybe misogyny and gender roles? As much as the pressure to conform exerted by society on Queer people is discussed, the topic of Queer-on-Queer pressure is hardly given this much attention. Allies are more than welcome to participate, but priority will be given to Queer people in sharing their thoughts. My aim is for this discussion to be an intersection of diverse points of view and different experiences; framed with a sociocultural perspective.

walid ~ he/she/they~ I am a 20-year-old LGBTIQ+ activist and artist from Tunisia, currently based in Tunis. My background is in human rights, the arts, and empowering Queer people. I have been working with a local Queer-focused NGO, Mawjoudin We Exist, for a year and a half now; organizing and facilitating capacity building workshops (both online and in-person) as well as participating in the decision-making process of the organization. I just started my freshman year of university, on my way to major in Anthropology and minor in Film. I have been reading and writing about gender expression, Queer beauty standards, and conformity for the past couple of months.

metaphor of crows ~ 12 pm pst / 3pm est / 21h00 cet

an inquiry into how our creative, free-form bodies are "tamed" by the dominant culture of oppression, capitalism and misogyny and the choices that many bodies are forced to make at a very young age in order to survive in this system. exploring how shutting down was a decision of brilliance and courage at the time it occured. body based somatic mindfulness practices that are an invitation to encourage our bodies to "come back home" and to be present. looking at our resilience and celebrating it. this session will also touch into our bloodline/ancestors and how our bodies are woven together through the generations.

resentful breath / wave breath : your body is a landscape of water ~ 10am pst / 1pm est / 19h00 cet

**note that this is a 10-minute audio piece that will be presented just before liberating the in-between**

resentful breath / wave breath: your body is a landscape of water is a sonic series inspired by guided meditations and the “how to” approach of a work-out video. the goal orientation of this sound experiment hopes to be a monument to catching one’s breath, calming the nervous system, and a digital spa where participants are guided back into self and into sensation. listeners are invited to lay down and let the sounds wash over them, gently move their body to what is being proposed - or do whatever they feel called to do in the moment!

be heintzman hope ~ it/they ~ moving between sound and performance, be heintzman hope is a facilitator of music, dance and embodiment ritual based between tio’tia:ke / montreal and the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (musquem), sḵwx̱wú7mesh, squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (tsleil-wateuth) peoples, colonially known as vancouver. their practice bridges dance training with conflict resolution, healing and community arts. they hold workshops in transitional spaces, dance institutions, diy contexts and festivals that center queer, trans and racialized bodies – offering meditation, singing and dance as medicines to those on the frontlines of their healing journeys. they have facilitated workshops for various organizations and institutions such as sherpa centre de recherche, queens university, mascalldance, ponderosa, the university of the arts philadelphia, and the center for gender advocacy.

liberating the in-between ~ 10am pst / 1pm est / 19h00 cet

**note that this workshop will begin with resentful breath /wave breath**

a fundamental problem with the concept of category is every single one falls apart upon virgoan investigation. the details don't hold up: some birds dont fly. others dont have gender. we will explore, with infinite curiosity: what vastness exists in between? how to allow for space in our joints, synapses, relationships? how to listen without controlling?

the aims of this workshop are to slow down, offer a level of energetic release, and allow space for nondefinition ~~ utilizing techniques of • breath • voice • dream • anatomy • astrology • language • consent.

energy release and restoration for healing race-based and ethnic trauma ~ 12pm pst / 3pm est / 21h00 cet

our trauma lives in our body. for people of color, this trauma often results in high effort coping skills that push us to constantly do more. this constant push for abolition from racism, from capitalism, from patriarchy, also requires the intentional practice of somatic abolition. the releasing of stuck energy, the processing of experiences, the coming to stillness (even if stillness looks likes movement). in this workshop, we start with a centering exercise and some slow intentional movement. from the movement portion we work our way into breathwork, and then wrap up our session with an open discussion and reflection.

naadiya hutchinson ~ she/they ~ naadiya is a lover of mother earth who uses her reflections and insights from nature to guide her yoga, meditation and movement work. trained in antigravity aerial yoga, meditation, sound healing, restorative yoga, and vinyasa yoga, naadiya ebbs and flows between these practices to provide her community with a sense of love for themselves and for the ever expansive world around them.

do the song: singing with tasks and images ~ 12:30pm pst / 3:30pm est / 21h00 cet

singers often use imagery to conjure a particular sound. a teacher will often give an instruction in the form of an image to help a singer find new sounds. they might say: "think about your molars," "imagine a bee is entering your tent," or "try to squeeze two grapefruits between your armpits." in this workshop, i'll share some 'warm-up' singing exercises with the group as well as some ways of animating these exercises with concrete and imagined images, repeating gestures and objects you have around the house.

no singing or movement experience is required, these task-based exercises are meant to be fun and exploratory and you won't be asked to sing in front of the other participants (you can keep yourself muted on zoom).

miranda jones ~she/her~ miranda is a theatre and dance artist with a daily singing practice. her performance and facilitation practice is full of game-like structures, improvisation and presence. her current research (with mentor sarah albu) is engaged in investigating vocal pedagogy, the imagined imagery that singers use to produce a sound, and the value systems that are tied to these images. she lives and works and sings in tiohtià:ke/montreal.
